In memory of Grant P. Goldman
Chesapeake - Grant P. Goldman, 51, of Chesapeake, passed away, Thursday, August 28, 2014. Born in Norfolk, he was the son of Dorthea B. Goldman and the late Dr. Edwin E. Goldman. Grant was the founder, owner and operator of various assisted living facilities in Virginia and North Carolina. He was a Past President of the Virginia Adult Home Association. He was also appointed to the Regulatory Advisory Committee for the Virginia Department of Social Services and the Mayor's Commission on Long Term Planning in Chesapeake. He was a member and two time Past President of the Deep Creek Ruritan Club.
Including his mother, Grant is survived by his wife, Traci Goldman; children, Megan, Katie, Grant,Garrett, William and Michael; siblings, Gretchen Owens and husband Roger, Edwin Goldman and wife Misty and Georgia Goldman; a companion and caregiver, Shanna Smith and her daughters, Sidney and Payton Smith; an uncle, Larry Goldman and wife Elizabeth; an aunt, JoAnn Goldman; a nephew, Brett Goldman and a niece, Summer Rickabaugh as well as numerous cousins and extended family.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Deep Creek Ruritan Club, P.O. Theme for This Year's Beef Fest: Our BeefFest Theme this year is "Ready Ruritan" in conjunction with National Preparedness Month. Ready Ruritan is all about partnering with local, State, Federal, Non-Governmental Agencies, and Private Businesses and Industry in a team effort to educate the Ruritan membership and local citizens about emergency preparedness. Food and Beverages served 2:45 to 6:00 p.m.: Texas-style BBQ beef, baked beans, cole slaw, rolls, special sauce, and hot dogs on request for the kids. Beer, mixed beverages, iced tea, lemonade, and soft drinks. All you can eat and all you can drink.
Ticket Availability: Bank of Hampton Roads (Deep Creek), Lawrence Pharmacy, MRO Computers & Astronomy, Bill Robins CPA Office, West Service Center, and any Ruritan member. Tickets purchased in advance are $25. Tickets purchased at the gate will be $30. Children may be admitted if accompanied by an adult with a ticket: 12 years old and under-No Charge; 13-17 years of age-Half Price; 18 years of age-Full Price.
Active Duty Military $5 Discount: This will apply to both active duty military personnel and spouse. On tickets sold to active duty military either in advance or at the gate, the military discount wording on the tickets should be circled.
Group Ticket Sales: Any group that purchases a block of 20 or more tickets will receive a $5 discount on each ticket. Any group that purchases a block of 10 tickets will receive a complimentary ticket.
Gate Location: The main gate will be at the road where the temporary fencing ends. Customers will park first, then enter the gate and present their ticket. The Gate ommittee will stamp the back of their hand. The hand stamp will be required in order to be served.
Welcome Table: Workers at the welcome table in the Isaak Walton facility will greet customers and check identifications for issuing bands required for access to alcoholic beverages. They will also provide information about Ruritan in general and Deep Creek Ruritans in particular.
Handicapped Parking and Takeout Parking will be available across the road from the building.
"Ready Ruritan" Program Kick-off and Preparedness Fair: This year's BeefFest will include Deep Creek Ruritans "Ready Ruritan" Program Kick-Off and First Annual Preparedness Fair. The American Red Cross, National Weather Service Warning Forecast Office, Wakefield, Citizens Corps Organizations such as the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Animal Response Team (CART), and our own Ready Ruritan Team, along with other preparedness organizations will be on hand to inform you about local hazards, what you can do to prepare for these hazards, and how they respond to disaster. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Chesapeake Police Department, & Chesapeake Sheriff Dept Crime Prevention units Crime unit representatives will be on hand to discuss ways you can mitigate crime in your neighborhood, Cyber Crime, and about their "See Something, Say Something" Campaign.
City of Chesapeake Sheriff's Office will be presenting their "Be a Buddy not a Bully" program on stage during this year's event. Show Time will be listed in the Ready Ruritan Tent.
Static Displays include: American Red Cross Response Vehicle (ERV), City of Chesapeake Police Car, and City of Chesapeake Fire Truck. Static Display will be located over by the Ready Ruritan Tent.
Face Painting by Red Barn Studios (RETURNING): Kathy Rose will be on hand to do face painting for the kids and may even make some balloon animals as well!
Blockheads (RETURNING): Great fun for the kids will be provided as they see incredible creative structures made from legos and have an opportunity to try building something themselves.
Inflatables - Bouncer (both large and small), Bungee Run, Jousting, and Dunk Tank (RETURNING): JLT & Associates to provide these items for the most family friendly BeefFest in Deep Creek Ruritan hgjhistory!

Directions to Isaak Walton Park: Follow George Washington Highway from Interstate 64 or Military Highway south for approximately one mile. Cross the bridge over the Dismal Swamp Canal and proceed straight ahead to the intersection with Shipyard Road (Elementary School on left corner). Turn left onto Shipyard Road and proceed about ¾ mile to signs showing where to turn left onto gravel road leading into Izaak Walton Park.

The Deep Creek Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) meets at the clubhouse on the first Monday at 7:00 of each month. We are the first responders for any type of disasters in our community.

The Chesapeake Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (CCPAAA) meets at the Deep Creek Ruritan clubhouse at 7:00 PM on the second Tuesday of each month. The Citizens Police Academy is a 14-week program (one 3-hour class per week) designed to acquaint Chesapeake citizens with the many facets of our city's police department. Two sessions are normally held each year - one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Graduates of the Citizens Police Academy are eligible to join the CCPAAA.
